Event ID 55 may be logged in the System log when you create many files on an NTFS partition on a Windows Server 2003-based or Windows XP-based computer

Symptoms

On a Windows Server 2003-based or Windows XP-based computer, an NTFS file system partition was formatted by using an allocation unit size (cluster size) that is smaller than 4,096 bytes. When you create many files on this partition, event ID 55 may be logged in the System log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: NTFS
Event ID: 55
Description:
The file system structure on disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume "Drive_letter:"
Note To determine the allocation unit size, type chkdsk.exe volume: at a command prompt, where volume is the drive letter of the volume. The allocation unit size appears to the left of bytes in each allocation unit.

For example, when you run Chkdsk.exe in read-only mode on a system drive, you receive results that resemble the following:
173550163 KB total disk space.
113608092 KB in 151865 files.
67348 KB in 10314 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
296991 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
59577732 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
43387540 total allocation units on disk.
14894433 allocation units available on disk.

Hotfix information for Windows Server 2003

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
