Error message when you use the Dcgpofix.exe command-line tool in a Windows Server 2003 R2-based domain: "Active Directory schema version for this domain, and the version supported by this tool do not match"

Symptoms

You try to use the Dcgpofix.exe command-line tool that is included in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 to restore Group Policy objects to the default state. You try to do this in a domain whose schema was updated to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2. However, the restore operation is unsuccessful. Instead, you receive the following error message:
The Active Directory schema version for this domain, and the version supported by this tool do not match. The GPO can be restored using the /ignoreschema command line parameter. However, it is recommended that you try and obtain an updated version of this tool that may have an updated version of the Active Directory schema. Restoring a GPO with an incorrect schema may result in unpredictable behavior. The restore failed. See previous messages for more details.

Cause

The Dcgpofix.exe command-line tool that is included in Windows Server 2003 works for domains that are running schema version 30. Windows Server 2003 R2 includes an update to the schema. A Windows Server 2003 R2-based forest or domain uses schema version 31. Therefore, the schema version of the domain does not match the schema version that the Dcgpofix.exe command-line tool expects.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use the Dcgpofix.exe command-line tool together with the /ignoreschema parameter. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt:
dcgpofix.exe /ignoreschema
Note No changes were made to schema objects or attributes in Windows Server 2003 R2 that affect Group Policy. Therefore, you can use the /ignoreschema parameter.
