Windows Server 2003 stops responding when the event log size is larger than the default size

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You deploy Microsoft Windows Server 2003. You configure the security event logs retention mandate and size mandate for a size that is larger than the default size. The system stops responding during typical usage and event log growth.

In this scenario, the following symptoms occur:
  • All processes that depend on the Service Control Manager (SCM) stop responding. For example, the server may eventually stop responding. If the server stops responding, you must restart the server.
  • If the server is a cluster node, the server stops responding. Failover to another node may not occur.
