The AuthzInitializeContextFromSid function fails or the Microsoft Password Change Notification Service cannot synchronize password changes in Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you experience the following symptoms:

Symptom 1

When an application calls the AuthzInitializeContextFromSid function, the function fails. Then, if the application calls the GetLastError function, the ERROR_MORE_DATA error is returned.

This problem occurs if the UserSid parameter that is specified in the AuthzInitializeContextFromSid function is present in the sIDHistory attribute of the user.

Symptom 2

The Microsoft Password Change Notification Service cannot synchronize password changes for users who have security identifiers (SIDs) stored in the sIDHistory attribute. In addition, the following events are logged in the Application log:

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Note The x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003 include the features and fixes in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. You do not have to apply Service Pack 1 to an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003.
