FIX: You may receive a Microsoft Management Console error message when you try to view the properties of a .NET object in Transaction Integration Manager

Symptoms

A computer has Microsoft Host Integration Server 2006 or Microsoft BizTalk Adapters for Host Systems installed. When you try to view the properties of a .NET object by using the Transaction Integrator (TI) Manager Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Management Console

Microsoft Management Console has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Note TI Manager closes when you click either Send Error Report or Don’t Send.

Additionally, an event message that resembles the following may be logged in the Application log:This problem only occurs when either of the following conditions is true:
  • The computer does not have Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) installed.
  • The computer has IIS installed. However, IIS is not started. In this scenario, you may receive the same MMC error message. However, the error message details may indicate that the faulting module is Ntdll.dll instead of Hipobjects.dll.

Cause

When the Properties dialog box for a .NET object is displayed in TI Manager, TI Manager tries to retrieve the array of virtual directories . If IIS is not installed or is not running, a null array is returned instead of an empty array. An application exception occurs when the null array is returned. Therefore, you experience the symptoms that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
