The Exchange Server 2003 Migration Wizard for Lotus Notes crashes with an access violation when the wizard processes a Lotus Notes e-mail message

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

The reply-to address of a Lotus Notes e-mail message contains the following header:
group:;[NOTES:group:;@DOMAIN]
When the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Migration Wizard for Lotus Notes processes the message, the wizard crashes with an access violation.

Cause

This problem occurs if the reply-to address of the message includes a semicolon. When the reply-to address includes a semicolon, the Exchange Server 2003 Migration Wizard for Lotus Notes considers the semicolon to be a delimiter. Therefore, the reply-to address is separated into two recipients when the Exchange Server 2003 Migration Wizard for Lotus Notes parses the reply-to address.

For example, the reply-to address group:;[NOTES:group:;@DOMAIN] is separated into the following recipients:
  • group:
  • [NOTES:group:;@DOMAIN]
However, the group: recipient is incorrect. Therefore, the address type and the address become null. This causes the Exchange Server 2003 Migration Wizard for Lotus Notes to crash.

Note In Request for Comments (RFC) 2822, it is common to use group:; as a reply-to address. Additionally, a semicolon is a possible character that can be used in a reply-to address.
