Display names that contain DBCS characters in the To box and in the Cc box are corrupted when you access a mailbox on an Exchange 2003 server

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

In Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, you access a mailbox that is hosted on a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2). However, the display names of the recipients in the To box and in the Cc box are corrupted. The display names appear as strings of question marks (?).

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • Outlook 2003 is configured to run in Cached Exchange Mode.
  • Outlook 2003 is configured to run in ANSI mode. In this case, the PreferANSI registry entry is set to a value of 1 under the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\EMSP
  • The display names of the recipients in the To box or in the Cc box contain double-byte character set (DBCS) characters. For example, the display names contain Japanese kanji characters.

Resolution

After you apply this hotfix, Exchange 2003 adds a simple display name as the recipient's display name in the data stream if the display name contains DBCS characters.
