Symptoms

When you try to open a front-end database in Microsoft Office Access 2007 after you encrypt the back-end database by using a password, the front-end database does not open.

Cause

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The database contains a custom Ribbon.
  • You split the database, and then encrypt the back-end with a password.
In this situation, when you open the front-end database, Access 2007 tries to use the USysRibbons table to obtain the custom Ribbon information. However, because the USysRibbons table resides in the encrypted back-end database, the front-end database cannot be successfully opened.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, create the custom Ribbon after you split the Access 2007 database.
