More information

Note We recommend that you use the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) x86-based Winnt32.exe file to install the x64-based operating system.

Install the x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 without the language pack

Requirements

  • Base operating system

You must have an x86-based Windows PE startup disk installed on the computer. Or you must have an x86-based Windows PE installed on the computer.
  • Product keys

Two product keys are required. One product key is for the x86-based Winnt32.exe file. The other product key is for the x64-based operating system.
To install the x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 without the language pack, follow these steps.

Note Steps 1 through 3 assume that the following conditions are true:
  • H:\x86 contains the x86 folder content that is from the Windows Server 2003 SP1 integrated CD.
  • I:\x64 contains the x64 folder content that is from the Windows Server 2003 original release version CD.
  • The x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 is to be installed on drive D.
  1. Restart the x86-based Windows PE.
  2. Run one of the following commands at a command prompt, based on your scenario:
    • A computer has only one partition, such as C. If that partition is not a system partition, run the following command:
      H:\x86\i386\Winnt32.exe /syspart:C /Makelocalsource:all /Noreboot /S:i:\x64\Amd64
    • A computer has two partitions, such as C and D. If partition C is a system partition, and if you would like to install the operating system on drive D, run the following command:
      H:\x86\i386\Winnt32.exe /Tempdrive:D /Makelocalsource:all /Noreboot /S:i:\x64\Amd64
    • A computer has two partitions, such as C and D. If neither of the partitions is a system partition, and if you would like to install the operating system on drive D, run the following command:
      H:\x86\i386\Winnt32.exe /syspart:C /Tempdrive:D /Makelocalsource:all /Noreboot /S:i:\x64\Amd64
  3. Before you exit the x86-based Windows PE, modify the following entries in the %SystemDrive%\$WIN_NT$.~BT\Winnt.sif file:
    • Under [UserData], modify the ProductID entry so that the entry contains the product key for the x64-based operating system installation.

Note Currently, the ProductID entry contains the product key of the x86-based operating system that is located in the H:\x86 folder.
    • Under [UserData], modify the ProductKey entry so that the entry contains the product key for the x64-based operating system installation.

Note Currently, the ProductKey entry contains the product key of the x86-based operating system that is located in the H:\x86 folder.
    • Exit the x86-based Windows PE.
    • The computer restarts in text-mode Setup of the x64-based operating system.
