An Excel 2003 formula returns the #NUM! error flag when the formula uses the NORMDIST and NORMSDIST function


Error message description

A Microsoft Office Excel 2003 formula may contain the statistical function NORMDIST. Additionally, the absolute value of (X-mean) for this function may have a value that is equal to or greater than 3,221,225,552. In this case, the formula returns the following error flag:
#NUM!

A Microsoft Office Excel 2003 formula may contain the statistical function NORMSDIST. Additionally, the absolute value of z for this function may have a value that is equal to or greater than 2,147,483,648. In this case, the formula returns the following error flag:
#NUM!

Resolution

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2003. If you have already installed the latest service pack for Office 2003, you do not have to reinstall it. However, you do have to set the
NORMDISTFix
registry key and activate the hotfix that is included in the service pack. To do this, go to the "How to enable this hotfix" section.

If you have not installed either the latest service pack for Office 2003 or the hotfix, you should install the latest service pack for Office 2003 if you can. If you cannot install the latest service pack for Office 2003 for some reason, you should install this hotfix. After you install the service pack or the hotfix, you have to set the
NORMDISTFix
registry key and activate the hotfix. To do this, go to the "How to enable this hotfix" section.

  1. Exit Excel 2003.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options\
  4. After you select the subkey that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type NORMDISTFix, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click NORMDISTFix, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.
