Error message when you try to use a customized lookup view in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0: "An error has occurred. For more information, contact your system administrator. Error code: 0x80040248"

Symptoms

After you customize the lookup view of an activity in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0, the lookup view does not work as expected. Additionally, you receive the following error message when you try to use the lookup view:
An error has occurred. For more information, contact your system administrator. Error code: 0x80040248.
After you close the error message, no record is displayed in the grid. No record is displayed even though you click Find in the lookup view.

For example, this problem may occur after you customize the Letter Lookup View and then add the Recipient column to this lookup view. This problem occurs when you try to use this customized lookup view.
