You receive an error message when you try to open the Properties dialog box for a network printer on a Windows XP-based computer or on a Windows Server 2003-based computer

Symptoms

On a client computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you to try to open the Printer Properties dialog box for a network printer that is connected to a Windows Server 2003-based domain controller. However, you receive the following error message:
Function address address caused a protection fault. Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, you must remove the printer and the associated printer driver, install the appropriate hotfix, and then reconnect to the network printer:
  1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
  2. Click the printer, and then press DELETE. Click Yes to verify.
  3. On the File menu, click Server Properties.
  4. Click the Drivers tab.
  5. Click the driver for the associated printer, and then click Remove. Click Yes to verify.
  6. Install the hotfix that is described in this article.

    Note This step can be performed before the other steps in this procedure.
  7. Connect to the network printer.
Note You must use an administrator account to perform these steps.

Windows XP Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem on client computers that are running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, install hotfix 931318.
