Number signs (#) are displayed in a cell instead of text characters in Excel 2003

Symptoms

In Microsoft Office Excel 2003, number signs (#) are displayed in a cell instead of text characters. This behavior occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You set the category to Text on the Number tab of the Format Cells dialog box.
  • The cell contains between 256 and 1024 text characters.
Note If the cell contains more than 1024 text characters, all the text characters are displayed.

Workaround

To work around this issue, set the category to General on the Number tab of the Format Cells dialog box.
