Error message when you try to create labels in Word 2007 and Word 2010: "There is a problem with the label information you are trying to use"


Symptoms

When you try to create a label in Microsoft Office Word 2007 or Microsoft Office Word 2010, you receive the following error message: 
There is a problem with the label information you are trying to use. You may be able to correct the problem by repairing Office or by reinstalling the label information.

Cause

This issue may occur if there is a problem with the label information files. The label information files are .xml files that are saved in the following folder:

Office 2007:
For x86: "drive:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\Pagesize"
For x64: "drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Pagesize"


Office 2010:

For x86: "drive:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\Pagesize"
For x64: "drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\Pagesize"
This issue may occur if any one or more of the following conditions are true: 
  • The .xml label information files were damaged.
  • The .xml label information files were incorrectly modified.
  • A new label information file was added. However, there is a problem with the .xml file.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, repair your installation of Word 2007, Word 2010 or of Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Office 2010. To do this, follow these steps: 
  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the following folder:

    Office 2007:

    For x86: "drive:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\Pagesize"
    For x64: "drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Pagesize"

    Office 2010:

    For x86: "drive:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\Pagesize"
    For x64: "drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\Pagesize"
  2. Right-click the Pagesize folder, click
  3. Rename, type a new name for the folder, such as Old_Pagesize, and then press ENTER.
  4. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
  5. In the list of currently installed programs, click either Microsoft Office Word 2007, Microsoft Office Word 2010 or Microsoft Office edition 2007, Microsoft Office edition 2010.
  6. Click Change.
  7. In the Setup program, click Repair, and then click Next.
