Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You use the dial tone database recovery procedure in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. You use the Mailbox Merge task to update the recovered mailboxes with content that was created during the restore and recovery procedure.

After you use the Mailbox Merge task, the folder permissions on the target mailbox store may be overwritten with permissions that exist on the source mailbox store.

More information

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

By default, the overwrite permissions feature is enabled when you merge your dial tone database to a production database. However, you can use the KeepTargetFolderACL DWORD value to enable or to disable the overwrite permissions feature.

The KeepTargetFolderACL DWORD value is located in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\MSExchangeAdmin\RecoverMailbox
Note If the RecoverMailbox subkey is not listed under MSExchangeAdmin, you must create this subkey.

If the KeepTargetFolderACL DWORD value does not exist, or if it exists but the value is 0, the merge process overwrites the permissions on the target folder. However, if the KeepTargetFolderACL value exists and has a nonzero value (such as 1), the permissions on the target folder are retained.
