Error message when you go offline in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM laptop client for Microsoft Office Outlook: "The data you have entered for one or more fields is too long. The record will be saved in CRM with truncated data"

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0.
  • You customize the Task entity to increase the field length of the description field.

    Note The default field length of the description field is 2000 characters.
  • You create a task activity that has data in the description field.
  • The data in the description field has more than 2000 characters but fewer than the number that you set when you customized the Task entity.
  • You go offline in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM laptop client for Microsoft Office Outlook.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message during the offline process:
The data you have entered for one or more fields is too long. The record will be saved in CRM with truncated data.
Also, when you view the task activity in Microsoft Dynamics CRM, the data in the description field is truncated.

Note This problem also occurs when you customize the Task entity to increase the field length of the body field.

The field lengths in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 laptop client for Outlook are hard-coded in the CRMADDIN file. This hotfix increases the hard-coded value from 2000 characters to 5000 characters.
