The DHCP scope settings periodically disappear on a Windows Server 2003-based computer

Symptoms

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server service is running on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. However, the DHCP scope settings periodically disappear.

Cause

This problem occurs in a scope when the following conditions are true:
  • The DHCP Management utility (Dhcpmgmt.msc) finds a reservation.
  • This reservation uses an invalid address that is the same as the start of the scope. For example, a scope that handles the 10.1.1.0 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 has a reservation in it for 10.1.1.0.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply hotfix 936009. For more information about hotfix 936009, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
936009 The "Lease duration for DHCP clients" option is set to 0 and some DHCP scope options disappear on a Windows Server 2003-based DHCP server

Workaround

To work around this problem, remove the problem reservation from the scope.
