Symptoms

On a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer, you cannot create a replication group for data collection when the root of a drive is selected as the source. Additionally, the following event is logged:
Event ID: 4212 
Source: DFSR  
Type: Error  
Description:
The DFS Replication service could not replicate the replicated folder at local path E: because the staging path is invalid or inaccessible.

Cause

This problem occurs because objects in the Active Directory directory service are configured incorrectly. Specifically, these objects do not reflect the correct path of the Staging and Conflict directory.

Resolution

Service pack information

Important This hotfix does not let administrators replicate any volumes that contain a page file. If you try to do this, the following 4312 Event message will be logged in the DFS Replication event log:

The DFS Replication service failed to get folder information when walking the file system on a journal wrap or loss recovery due to repeated sharing violations encountered on a folder. The service cannot replicate the folder and files in that folder until the sharing violation is resolved.

You may also receive the following 6410 Event message:

Replicated folder is overlapping with a Windows system folder.
