Error message when you open a DTS package on a Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer: "MMC has detected an error in snap-in"

Symptoms

When you close a Microsoft SQL Server Data Transformation Services (DTS) package and then open another DTS package on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer, you receive the following error message:
MMC has detected an error in snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC.
Additionally, if you ignore the error message and continue to run the DTS package, the left menu in Microsoft Management Console (MMC) disappears. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You run more than 200 SQL Server DTS packages daily.
  • You manage DTS packages on a computer that is also running SQL Server.

Resolution

Service pack information
