In certain scenarios, you may have to verify whether FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions is installed on the computer. For example, when software updates for FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions are available, you must first verify whether FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions is installed on the computer. This process helps you determine whether the software update is required for that computer.

When FrontPage Server 2002 Server Extensions is installed on the computer, the following registry subkey is present on the computer:To determine whether FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions is installed on the computer, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\5.0
3. Verify whether the Setup Packages registry subkey is present. If it is, FrontPage Server 2002 Extensions is installed on the computer.
   
   Note If the Setup Packages registry subkey is not present, FrontPage Server 2002 Extensions is not installed on the computer. Be aware that if you remove and then reinstall FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions on the computer, the Setup Packages registry subkey is re-created in the registry. In this scenario, you may see both a Setup Packages registry subkey and a Setup Packages OSE registry subkey.
4. Exit Registry Editor.

After you verify that FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions is installed on the computer, you may have to determine whether a particular FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions software update is required for the computer.

To do this, compare the version of the files that are included in the software update with the version of the files that are installed on the computer. Then use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your situation:

• The version of the files that are installed on the computer may be the same as or later than the version of the files that are included in the software update. In this situation, you do not have to install the software update on the computer.
• The version of the files that are installed on the computer may be earlier than the version of the files that are included in the software update. In this situation, install the software update on the computer.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-017discusses a vulnerability in FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions. The presence of the Fpadmdll.dll file on the computer does not, by itself, provide an attack vector. For a computer to be vulnerable, FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions must be installed on the computer and the World Wide Web Publishing Service must also be running.

Note You can install Security Bulletin MSO6-017 on a computer on which the World Wide Web Publishing Service is not running but on which FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions is installed.

Typically, to determine whether you must install a security update, you check for the versions of the files that are identified as vulnerable by the security bulletin.
