View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you try to split a database by using the Database Splitter in Microsoft Office Access 2007, you may receive the following error message:
Database Splitter
Could not lock file.

Cause

This problem occurs if the database file name is longer than 258 characters. When Access 2007 creates a locking file, the file name extension changes from ".accdb" to ".laccdb". If the database file name is longer than 258 characters, the extra character in the locking file name extension causes the locking file name to exceed the character limit for Access files. Therefore, the database cannot be split.
