An incorrect address is displayed when an external user replies to a message that was routed from the Internet to an Exchange 2003 server by using the Domino messaging system

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes to connect to a Lotus Domino messaging system.
  • The Domino messaging system receives an e-mail message from the Internet. Additionally, the Domino messaging system serves as the primary incoming SMTP gateway.
  • The message is delivered to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 user by using the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes.
  • The Exchange Server user replies to all recipients of the message. Additionally, the Exchange Server user adds a second external user to the message.
In this scenario, the return address of the message for the first external user is encapsulated as a Notes address that resembles the following address:
user1@internet.com@notesdomain
Therefore, the second external user cannot reply to the first external user.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install version 06.05.7917 of the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes or a later version of the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes. To obtain version 06.05.7917 of the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes or a later version of the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Hotfix information

After you apply the hotfix, you must enable the hotfix. To do this, you must edit the LME-NOTES section of the Exchconn.ini file to add a new HandleSMTPSender field. If the HandleSMTPSender field is not present, or if the value is set to 0, the default product behavior is observed. You must change the value of the HandleSMTPSender field to 1 to enable the hotfix.

After you enable the hotfix, the return address of the message is converted to SMTP format. In other words, as soon as a message arrives on an Exchange server through the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes, the Exchange server handles all additional routing of the message instead of sending the message back through the connector to be routed by the Domino messaging system.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.
