The Language bar disappears from the screen when you run a program in full-screen mode on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You use the Windows Language bar or a Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1). You run a program in full-screen mode. For example, you run Microsoft Internet Explorer in kiosk mode, or you run a Microsoft PowerPoint slide show presentation. However, the Language bar disappears from the screen. Therefore, you cannot use the Language bar to enter text in multiple languages.

Service pack information

Enable the hotfix

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. After you install the hotfix, you must enable it. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\MSCTF
  3. Right-click MSCTF, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type EnableLanguagebarInFullscreen, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click EnableLanguagebarInFullscreen, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
