Introduction

This article describes a hotfix that you can use to change the way that Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) handles a disabled Active Directory user account that is associated with a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 mailbox.

More information

If a disabled user account that is associated with an Exchange Server 2003 SP2 mailbox does not have the Associated External Account user right and the msExchMasterAccountSid property, Exchange Server 2003 cannot perform the following actions:
  • Enable a different user to log on to the mailbox
  • Enable the mailbox to receive messages
  • Include the mailbox in a public folder access control list
  • Include the mailbox in a mailbox folder access control list
  • Move the mailbox
  • Successfully run the mailbox cleanup agent
Additionally, an event ID 9548 message is logged in the Application log when Exchange Server 2003 tries to perform any one of these actions. This issue occurs because the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service contains logic that assumes that every disabled user account that is associated with an Exchange Server 2003 SP2 mailbox has the Associated External Account user right and the msExchMasterAccountSid property.

A hotfix is available to change the logic in the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. This hotfix causes the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service to operate as if the msExchMasterAccountSid property is set to the SELF SID value. Therefore, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service uses the objectSid property of the disabled user account. After you apply this hotfix, Exchange Server 2003 can perform the actions in the list that is mentioned earlier in this document even if the disabled user account does not have the msExchMasterAccountSid property.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) before you install the hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply the hotfix. However, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store Service and all dependent services will be restarted.
