View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a computer that is using the Microsoft Storport storage driver for a host bus adapter (HBA). After you do this, the following Warning event may be logged in the System log:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: mp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 56
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A
Computer: ComputerName
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 56 ) in Source ( mp ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
Data:
0000: 00100000 005e0001 00000000 80040038
0010: 0000000a c0000017 00000000 00000000
0020: 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000
0030: 00000000 0000006e
You may also receive similar Warning events that correspond to event IDs 118 or 129. The messages for these events are not useful, because there is no supplied way to decipher the data.

Cause

This problem is caused by the following errors that occur during the installation of Windows Server 2003 SP1:
  • The Windows Server 2003 SP1 Storport driver (Storport.sys) does not correctly register itself as a System event producer with the System log.
  • Windows Server 2003 SP1 does not install the latest version of the IoLogMsg.dll file. This problem occurs because the IoLogMsg.dll file is not listed in the Spfiles.txt file. Because of this error, the following new Storport error log IDs are not resolved:
    REQUEST TIMEOUT => IO_WARNING_RESET
    HIERARCHICAL RESET => IO_WARNING_BUS_RESET

Technical support for x64-based versions of Microsoft Windows

If your hardware came with a Microsoft Windows x64 edition already installed, your hardware manufacturer provides technical support and assistance for the Windows x64 edition. In this case, your hardware manufacturer provides support because a Windows x64 edition was included with your hardware. Your hardware manufacturer might have customized the Windows x64 edition installation by using unique components. Unique components might include specific device drivers or might include optional settings to maximize the performance of the hardware. Microsoft will provide reasonable-effort assistance if you need technical help with a Windows x64 edition. However, you might have to contact your manufacturer directly. Your manufacturer is best qualified to support the software that your manufacturer installed on the hardware. If you purchased a Windows x64 edition such as a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 edition separately, contact Microsoft for technical support.
