Introduction

This article describes the Office 2003 issue that is fixed in the Office 2003 post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package that is dated April 24, 2006.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • When you install Office 2003, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
    Fatal Error. Install aborts with CRC failure
    Failed to download file: OSE.EXE.
    Error 0x80070017
    Failed to download file.
    Error 0x80070017
    failed to wait for file
    LocalCache has failed.� EnforceCache has been set.� Exiting.
    Note The updated Office Source Engine (Ose.exe) file on the administrative installation point does not have to be updated after you install this hotfix to resolve this issue.


New Office 2003 functionality that is added in this hotfix

When you install the hotfix that is described in this article, a new functionality is added to Office 2003. This new functionality allows the Office Source Engine to recognize system environment variables in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Delivery\SourceEngine\Downloads\{OfficeProductGUID}\Sources\{OfficeProductGUID}

Regression issues

If a transform file such as office2003.mst is not stored in the installation root folder, the transform file cannot be cached correctly during the installation process of this hotfix. Therefore, a critical failure during Setup will occur. To work around this issue, make sure that all transform files are stored in the installation root folder.

Prerequisites

This hotfix is a Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office 2003 Service Pack 2 installed.
