FIX: An IBM DB2 administrator may be unable to execute tasks against the IBM DB2 system catalog when an application that uses Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 in Host Integration Server 2004 is querying IBM DB2 tables

When an application that uses Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 is querying IBM DB2 tables, an IBM DB2 administrator may be unable to execute tasks against the IBM DB2 system catalog.

Note Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 is included with Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004.

When this problem occurs, an IBM DB2 administrator may be unable to execute data definition language (DDL) commands. Examples of DDL commands are the CREATE TABLE command and the ALTER TABLE command. The DDL commands time out, or the DDL commands are blocked until the lock on the IBM DB2 system catalog is released.

This problem occurs when an application that uses Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 is issuing a SELECT statement against the IBM DB2 tables. This problem does not occur when the application is issuing the following commands against the IBM DB2 tables:

• INSERT
• UPDATE
• DELETE

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

After you apply this hotfix, Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 closes the cursor after the last read-only row is read. Therefore, the lock on the IBM DB2 system catalog is released in a timely manner.
