When you try to restart or shut down a remote Windows XP-based or Windows Server 2003-based computer, the restart or shutdown process may stop responding (hang) if a screen saver is enabled on the remote computer

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You have a remote Windows XP-based or Windows Server 2003-based computer on which a screen saver is enabled. You try to restart or shut down the remote computer. In this scenario, the restart or shutdown process may stop responding (hang). Therefore, you must physically restart or shut down the computer.

This problem may also occur when you try to restart the computer after you deploy a software package or an upgrade.

Hotfix information for Windows XP

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
