Symptoms

When you try to open a Web site as a Web folder in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, you receive an error message that the Web folder address is too long. Additionally, you cannot open the Web site. This problem only occurs if the Web site URL string has many characters.

Cause

This problem occurs because there is a limit of 1,024 characters for the URL string when you try to open a Web site as a Web folder.

After you install this hotfix, you must create the KB910365_INCREASE_WEBFOLDER_MAXURLLENGTH_TO_INTERNETMAXURLLENGTH registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type KB910365_INCREASE_WEBFOLDER_MAXURLLENGTH_TO_INTERNETMAXURLLENGTH, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  8. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Registry Editor.
The KB910365_INCREASE_WEBFOLDER_MAXURLLENGTH_TO_INTERNETMAXURLLENGTH registry subkey increases the character limit of a URL string to 2,083. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
