Symptoms

When you try to use FrontPage Server Extension 2002 for Microsoft to add roles to the Web site, you receive the following error message:
Cannot open file roles.ini for writing.

Cause

The problem occurs because the _vti_bin virtual directory uses the DefaultAppPool application pool. The DefaultAppPool application pool is running under a Network Service that does not have permission to access the Roles.ini file.

Note You set the DefaultAppPool application pool when you manually create the _vti_bin virtual directory without an application root. If there is no application root for the virtual directory, the application pool will be inherited from the parent directory.

Workaround

To work around this problem, change the application pool to the MSSharePointAppPool application pool. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

  1. Right-click the _vti_bin folder, and then click Properties.
  2. Verify the application pool on the virtual directory tab.

Note The application pool list is unavailable (dimmed), but the list will display the current application pool that is being used.
  3. If the application pool is the DefaultAppPool application pool, follow these steps to correct the issue:
    1. Right-click the _vti_bin folder, and then click Properties.
    2. Click Create on the Virtual Directory tab.
    3. Change the application pool to MSSharePointAppPool.

Method 2

  1. Open the SharePoint Administration page for the Web site that has the problem.
  2. Click Upgrade Virtual Server with FrontPage Server Extensions 2002.

Note In Method 2, FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 for Microsoft sets the application pool without the application name.
