Symptoms

When you send e-mail messages by using the any one of the following programs, unrecognizable characters may appear in the body of the e-mail messages:
  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0
  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 client for Microsoft Office Outlook
  • Microsoft CRM 1.2
  • Microsoft CRM 1.2 Sales for Outlook (the Outlook client)
You typically experience this problem when you send e-mail messages to recipients who are in a European country, such as Germany.

Cause

This problem occurs because when you send e-mail messages by using these programs, the outgoing e-mail messages are encoded with the default code page of UTF-8. In some countries, a different code page is used. Additionally, some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) do not support UTF-8 encoded e-mail messages. Therefore, e-mail messages do not appear correctly if the messages contain extended characters, such as letters that have an umlaut. Instead, the extended characters appear as unrecognizable characters.

In some European countries, such as Germany, one of the following Western European code pages is typically used:
  • ISO-8859-1
  • ISO-8859-15
