This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

How to enable the hotfix
- Quit Excel 2003.
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\GELPrefs
- After you select the key that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type MaxOffscreenBitmapSize, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click MaxOffscreenBitmapSize, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type a value that is greater than 3072, and then click OK.
Note In some circumstances, you may have to type a large value in the Value data box to prevent this problem. An example of a large value is 10,000. - On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
