Performance problems that may occur on a Windows Server 2003-based server

Symptoms

One of the following performance problems may occur on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server:
  • Applications that use large file I/O operations show very low performance.
  • Services that use large file I/O operations show very low performance.
  • You cannot make terminal sessions.
  • The server restarts unexpectedly. Then, the server displays an error message that states "Stop."
  • The server encounters poor performance from Microsoft Message Queuing (also known as MSMQ).
These issues occur if the following conditions are true:
  • Microsoft Message Queuing 3.0 is installed on the server.
  • The storage quota is set too high. For example, the storage quota is set to a size larger than 3 gigabytes (GB).
  • The current message storage reaches the storage limit.

These problems occur because system resources are insufficient. Many messages require many resources.

The default storage quota for Message Queuing in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 is 1 GB. If you increase the value of the storage quota, you may experience instability. In some instances, the storage quota can be modified if more than 1 GB of storage is necessary.
