FIX: You receive a "Stop: 0x0000008E" error message when you back up or copy files from a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 to a network drive by using Windows Services for UNIX 3.5

Symptoms

When you back up or copy files from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to a network drive, you may receive the following error message:
Stop: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xf734eab5, 0xf5f69a2c, 0x00000000)
This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • The network drive is located on a computer that is running UNIX.
  • You have installed Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 on the computer that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1.
  • You use the Client for NFS command-line tool in Windows Services for UNIX to mount the network drive.
  • One or more of the files that you back up or copy is larger than 4 gigabytes (GB).

Cause

This problem occurs because of a problem in the client redirector component of the Client for NSF command-line tool.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

You must have Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 installed on the computer to apply this hotfix. You must only apply this hotfix to a computer that is running the Client for NFS service.

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
