Poor performance, connectivity issues, and increased memory use occurs in Exchange Server 2003 when certain types of IMAP4 search requests are received

Symptoms

When Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 receives Internet Message Access Protocol, Version 4rev1 (IMAP4) search requests, one or more of the following symptoms may occur:
  • Users experience poor performance when they are connected to Exchange Server 2003.
  • Users cannot connect to Exchange Server 2003.
  • The Information Store service (Store.exe) uses more memory than expected on the Exchange Server 2003 server.
  • The Information Store service stops responding.
  • Events that are similar to the following event are logged on the system event log on the Exchange Server 2003 server:


    Event ID: 9582
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSExchangeIS
    Event Category: Performance
    Event ID: 9582
    Description: The virtual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is fragmented in such a way that normal operation may begin to fail. It is highly recommended that you restart all Exchange services to correct this issue.

Note The search requests that are discussed in this article are received from IMAP4 clients. IMAP4 clients include Microsoft Outlook and some mobile phones.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

You must have Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 installed.

Restart requirement

The Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store service is stopped and then restarted when you install this hotfix

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other software updates.
