Shadow Copies of Shared Folders is a Windows Server 2003 feature that takes point-in-time backups of user's data files. These point-in-time backups are also known as "snapshots." If a user unintentionally deletes or damages a file, that user might be able to recover a recent version of the file from a Shadow Copies of Shared Folders snapshot. Although Shadow Copies of Shared Folders is a server feature, this feature also requires support on the client computer. This client-side support is also referred to as the Shadow Copy Client.
Typically, Shadow Copies of Shared Folders runs on a local file server. In this situation, if a user unintentionally deletes a file, and if a good snapshot is not available on the local file server, that user could not restore the deleted file.
Data Protection Manager is a data protection solution that extends Shadow Copies of Shared Folders. Data Protection Manager is a stand-alone disk backup program that contains the End-User Recovery feature. You can use the End-User Recovery feature to recover files from a Data Protection Manager server. You can do this without having to obtain assistance from an administrator. In this situation, if you try to recover a shared file or folder that is located on a Data Protection Manager-protected server, the following behavior occurs:
- If local shadow copies or "snapshots" are available on the local file server, you are prompted to recover the file or folder from the local shadow copy.
- If the following conditions are true, you are redirected to shadow copies of the file or folder that exist on the Data Protection Manager server:
- No local shadow copies of that file or folder exist.
- The update that is described in this article is installed on the computer.
Note By default, the End User Recovery feature of the Shadow Copy Client directs the user to recover files from the local file server.
The update that is described in this article is designed to optimize the way that the Shadow Copy Client accesses snapshots. Without this update installed, the Shadow Copy Client opens every existing shadow copy for a particular volume. After you install this update, the Shadow Copy Client searches for unique versions of a shadow copy before the Shadow Copy Client opens the shadow copy. This new behavior significantly reduces the load that the Shadow Copy Client puts on the server.
Additionally, this software update replaces the functionality that is included in the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
895536 How to use the End User Recovery functionality of Data Protection Manager in Windows XP
Microsoft Knowledge Base article 895536 describes an update to extend the Shadow Copy Client functionality. This software update changes the Shadow Copy Client. For example, if the Shadow Copy Client cannot locate the required shadow copy on the local server, the Shadow Copy Client looks for a Data Protection Manager server from which to obtain the shadow copy.
Important The change in functionality that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 895536 is also included in the software update that is described in this article. Therefore, if you install the software update that is mentioned in this article, you do not have to install the update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 895536.
Note To use the End-User Recovery functionality of Data Protection Manager, you must do both the following:
- You must update the Shadow Copy Client on the client computer by installing the software update that is described in this article.
- You must enable the End User Recovery feature on the Data Protection Manager server.
