Symptoms

When you install a new chipset driver in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you may receive a nonmaskable interrupt (NMI) error message.

Cause

This problem occurs because the PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) bus driver (Pci.sys) does not correctly enumerate devices after the new chipset driver is installed.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply this hotfix before you install a new chipset driver.

Workaround

To work around this problem, disconnect any unnecessary devices before you install the new chipset driver. For example, disconnect any SCSI controllers, PCI bridges, or tape drives.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
