Telnet is not installed when you install Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

When you install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003, you may experience the following problems:
  • Telnet is not installed. The Telnet service is not listed in the Services console (Services.msc).
  • When you type tlntsvr /service to install Telnet, Telnet is not installed.
You may also experience these problems if you apply Service Pack 1 to a Windows Server 2003-based computer.

Cause

This problem may occur if the computer name includes 15 characters.

Note A computer name that includes 15 characters may be automatically generated during the installation of Windows Server 2003 in either of the following scenarios:
  • You do not specify a computer name when you are prompted during a manual installation.
  • You do not specify a computer name in the Unattend.txt file when you perform an unattended installation.

Service pack information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

You must be running Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Note x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003 do not require this service pack.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

By default, when you install Windows Server 2003 SP1 or an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003, Telnet is installed. However, the Telnet service is disabled.
