Cause

This issue occurs if either of the following conditions are true:
  • You are not running Windows Server 2003. Windows Update offers Windows Server 2003 SP1 only to computers that can install Windows Server 2003 SP1. You may already be running Windows Server 2003 SP1, or you may be running another version of Windows.
  • You are running a Dell server and the following conditions are true:
    • The Dell server has a factory installed version of Windows Server 2003.
    • The Dell server has a disk controller that was installed by Dell, and the Windows Server 2003 CD does not contain the disk controller driver.
    • The Dell server is configured as a domain controller.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: You are not running Windows Server 2003

If you are already running Windows Server 2003 SP1, you will not see Windows Server 2003 SP1 on the Windows Update Web site.

To determine whether you are already running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type winver in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Look for a "Service Pack 1" entry at the end of the line that starts with "Version 5.2."
If you are running another version of Windows, you cannot install Windows Server 2003 SP1. You must be running Windows Server 2003 before you can install Windows Server 2003 SP1 by using the Windows Update Web site.

Method 2: You are running a Dell server

Use this method if you are running a Dell server and the following conditions are true:
  • The Dell server has a factory installed version of Windows Server 2003.
  • The Dell server has a disk controller that was installed by Dell, and the Windows Server 2003 CD does not contain the disk controller driver.
  • The Dell server is configured as a domain controller.
The server may contain a problem in the registry that is caused by the original factory installation.

Note If you have installed Windows Server 2003 directly from a Microsoft CD or you have upgraded from an earlier version of Windows, this issue does not apply to you.

To resolve this issue, install the following update. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Windows Update does not offer Windows Server 2003 SP1 to any Dell servers that meet the previous criteria until the update has been installed on the server. Install the update on all Dell servers that meet the previous criteria, even if the servers are not configured as domain controllers. Additionally, we recommend that you install the update on all Dell servers including Dell servers that have successfully upgraded to Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Windows Update blocks a computer from downloading Windows Server 2003 SP1 if the following four conditions exist:
  1. The Dell.sdr file is located on drive C of the computer. The Dell.sdr file indicates that the Dell server has a factory installed version of Windows Server 2003.
  2. The computer is configured as a domain controller.
  3. The computer has a disk controller that was installed by Dell, and the Windows Server 2003 CD does not contain the disk controller driver. To confirm that this is the case, check to see if any of the following files exist in the Windows\System32\Drivers folder:
    • Mraid35x.sys
    • Perc2.sys
    • A320raid.sys
    • Aac.sys
    • Symmpi.sys
    • Cercsr6.sys
    • Aarich.sys
    • Fasttx2k.sys
  4. The following registry key is not present:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DELL]:Dell_RegFix_Success
This registry key indicates that the RegPrep tool has not been run on the computer.
