You receive a "The Macros in this file do not match the digital signature" error message when you open a file that was saved from a signed template in Excel 2003

Symptoms

When you open a workbook that was saved from a signed template in Microsoft Office Excel 2003, the workbook opens and you receive the following error message:
The Macros in this file do not match the digital signature. Only a macro virus would cause this. Please Scan for viruses, and notify the publisher of the document. Macros will be disabled.

Cause

This problem may occur when you follow these steps:
  1. You open a signed template that contains Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros.
  2. You save the file as a new "File name."
  3. You open the new file.
After you save the file as a new "File name," the digital signature has been invalidated. However, the digital signature has not been completely removed from the new file.
