Introduction

This article discusses application compatibility testing that was performed for the English version of Windows Server 2003 SP1. The Windows Application Experience test teams tested 127 server applications on computers that were running Windows Server 2003 with SP1. The goal of the test teams was to verify that the server applications maintained the same level of functionality that was verified for Windows Server 2003.

This article contains two tables that summarize the results of these application compatibility tests. The first table lists the applications that passed the tests. The second table lists the applications where regressions were found. The second table contains some recommendations that you can use to possibly resolve or to work around regression issues.

More information

The application compatibility tests focused on the following areas:
  • The primary functionality of the application
  • The functionality of the application on hardware that uses no-execute technology
  • Remote administration functionality from the server to the client
  • Clustering scenarios for cluster-aware applications
All tests were performed by using the default settings in the English version of Windows Server 2003 SP1. An application passed if no failing functionality regression was found when the functionality of the application in Windows Server 2003 with SP1 was compared to the functionality of the application in Windows Server 2003.

The applications that were tested included many server application segments. The server application segments include the following:
  • Antivirus
  • Firewall
  • Backup
  • Database
  • Communication
  • Systems management
  • Active Directory directory service
  • Business intelligence
  • Web development
  • System utilities

MicrosoftBaseline Security Analyzer 1.2.1In Group Policy, the application does not notify the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF).

By default, one option that is selected for MBSA is Check for Windows Vulnerabilities. Another option that is also selected is for Windows Firewall to be managed by Group Policy. This option is selected when the scan is complete and when the Check for Windows Vulnerabilities option is selected. After you install Windows Server 2003 SP2 and you run MBSA on that computer, the MBSA scan results will not detect or report that Group Policy manages Windows Firewall. This occurs even if Group Policy does manage Windows Firewall, The problem is that MBSA is looking for certain registry keys, such as the EnableFirewall registry key. However, those keys have changed for Windows Firewall in Windows Server 2003.
