You cannot use Outlook Express to download an e-mail message, and you receive an event message in the Application log that is similar to the following:
Event Type:	Error
Event Source:	IMAP4SVC  
Event Category:	None
Event ID:	1023
Description:
Error 0x8004050a occurred while rendering message <message id> for download for user <user E-mail>.

Cause

The e-mail message contains an embedded Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (S/MIME) digital signature. The digital signature is obtained from Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1. The event that is logged in the Application log occurs when you use Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) version 4rev1 (IMAP4) to download the message in Outlook Express.

Note This issue only occurs when a third-party virus scan software is enabled in Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
