You receive an "Access denied" error message, and the program unexpectedly quits when you try to open or save a file in an Office program

Symptoms

When you try to open or save a file in a Microsoft Office program, you receive the following error message:
Access denied
Additionally, the program unexpectedly quits.

Cause

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You try to open a file that is located in a redirected folder that has been set by Group Policy, or you try to save a file to a redirected folder that has been set by Group Policy.
  • The parent folder of the redirected folder does not have the Read Attributes permission set for you.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, set the permissions on the parent folder of the redirected folder as listed in the following table.

More Information

Office programs use an enhanced version of the common Microsoft Windows Open dialog box. This is because Office resiliency includes information about general population of the user interface and its functionality.

When you open or save a file in an Office program, a general configuration test pass verifies various parts of the program and its components. Based on this test pass, Office resiliency confirms the availability of network connections as supported networks because these connections may be needed to retrieve files and registry settings. This test pass also verifies the attributes on each folder in the directory tree.
