Windows Server 2003-based or Windows XP-based client computers may not receive any Group Policy objects from a new organization unit

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You move computer accounts to another organization unit (OU) in the Active Directory directory service.
  • You use the GPUPDATE command together with the FORCE parameter at a command prompt.
In this scenario, Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based or Microsoft Windows XP-based client computers may not receive any Group Policy objects (GPOs) from the new OU.

This problem occurs because the distinguished name cache on the client computers is not updated.

Resolution

Windows XP hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Workaround

To work around this problem, restart your computer. Or, wait 30 minutes for the client computers to receive the GPOs from the new OU.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This bug was corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
