Outlook 2003 includes a feature that automatically detects and corrects the loss of network connections to Microsoft Exchange Server computers and to global catalog servers. This feature dramatically improves the user experience in unreliable network environments or when maintenance is performed on servers. Instead of displaying an error message when a user opens an e-mail message after a connection is lost, Outlook tries to reestablish the network connection in the background. If the connection is successful, the e-mail message opens.
By default, Outlook 2003 polls the network connection every 15 seconds. Because this network connectivity detection method is processor intensive, it reduces the number of Outlook clients that a single terminal server can support. To increase the number of Outlook 2003 clients that can be supported, you can configure the ConnManagerPoll registry entry so that Outlook polls the network connection less frequently. However, consider that if you configure the polling interval so that Outlook polls the network connection less frequently, Outlook users may potentially receive more error messages if there are network connectivity issues.
How to add and configure the ConnManagerPoll registry entry
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To add and configure the ConnManagerPoll registry entry, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\RPC
- On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type ConnManagerPoll as the entry name, and then press ENTER.

This registry setting is a per user setting that is stored in each user's profile. To propagate this setting to all users' profiles, you must use a logon script, a Group Policy object, or similar technology.
We currently recommend this registry setting for both AMD64 and Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) servers that are running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition.
Scalability on a 32-bit operating system is typically limited by other factors. Therefore, this registry setting does not significantly increase the number of Outlook 2003 clients that can be supported on a 32-bit Windows operating system.
