An e-mail message stays in the Outbox and the Exchange Server 2003 transaction log files grow when an Entourage user tries to send a message that exceeds the size limit in Global Settings

Symptoms

When a Microsoft Entourage user tries to send an e-mail message that exceeds the size limit that is configured in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Global Settings, the following symptoms may occur:
  • The e-mail message stays in the sender's Outbox.
  • The transaction log files on the computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 quickly grow until you delete the message from the user's Outbox.
  • The user receives the following misleading error message when he or she tries to send the e-mail message the first time:
    An unknown error (-18493) has occurred. Your mailbox has exceeded the size limit. Account name: "Username"

Note The size limit is configured in the Message Delivery Properties box in Exchange Server 2003 Global Settings.

Cause

This problem may occur when the value that is configured for the sent message size for the user mailbox is larger than the value that is configured for the sent message size in Global Settings.

Resolution

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Exchange Server 2003. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Hotfix information

Note If your organization includes front-end servers and back-end servers, install this hotfix on the front-end servers first.

Restart requirement

The following services automatically stop and then restart when you install this hotfix:
  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store
  • World Wide Web Publishing Service
  • Simple Mail Transport Protocol
  • Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine
  • IIS Admin Service

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other software updates.

File information

Workaround

To work around this problem, turn off the Send Receive All option in Entourage. To do this:
  1. On the Tools menu in Entourage. click Schedules.
  2. In the Schedules dialog box, click to clear the Send and Receive All check box.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
