Symptoms

An access violation (AV) occurs in the digest!CList::GetNext method when you run two or more Microsoft Windows HTTP Services (WinHTTP) 5.1 applications at the same time that use Digest Authentication. This problem occurs in Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

Cause

This problem occurs when multiple processes for the WinHTTP 5.1 applications try to access a data structure at the same time in the Digest Libraries. When this problem occurs, the WinHTTP 5.1 applications go out of synchronization. You experience an access violation.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
