You cannot use WMI to collect SQL performance counters for all the instances of SQL Server 2000 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

If multiple instances of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 are running on a single computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you cannot use Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to collect SQL performance counters for all the instances.

Cause

This problem occurs because WMI does not correctly behave when a service uses the
Linkage
registry subkey to list data for multiple instances.

Programs that manage multiple devices and performance data for each device must add a
Linkage
registry subkey to the
Services
registry subkey. The
Linkage
registry key must contain an Export entry. The value of this entry is a list of the device names.

For example, a system with two Etherlink cards might use the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Elnkii\Linkage
The value of the Export entry in this subkey might be similar to the following:
"\Device\Elnk01" "\Device\Elnk02"
