How to use the 32-bit Control Panel items on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 or of Windows XP

The x64-based versions of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and of Microsoft Windows XP are designed to use the 64-bit Control Panel items. However, these operating systems do have 32-bit Control Panel items available for use. This article tells how to use the 32-bit Control Panel items on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 or of Windows XP.

Note The 32-bit items may not have the same user interface as the 64-bit items. The 32-bit items may have less functionality. We recommend that you use the 64-bit items whenever you can.

To use the 32-bit Control Panel items, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click View x86 Control Panel Icons.
   
   Note If some 32-bit Control Panel items are still not displayed, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Note The 32-bit Control Panel items cannot be opened by using the Run command on the Start menu. They must be opened from Control Panel user interface.

Your hardware manufacturer provides support because a Windows x64 edition was included with your hardware. Your hardware manufacturer might have customized the Windows x64 edition installation with unique components. Unique components might include specific device drivers or might include optional settings to maximize the performance of the hardware. Microsoft will provide reasonable-effort assistance if you need technical help with your Windows x64 edition. However, you might have to contact your manufacturer directly. Your manufacturer is best qualified to support the software that your manufacturer installed on the hardware.
