The Ldifde.exe tool may not export all group members when you export from multiple groups that contain many members in Windows 2000 or in Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

The Ldifde.exe tool may not export all group members when you export from multiple groups that contain many members. For example, this scenario occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You use the Ldifde.exe tool to export multiple groups.
  • On a Microsoft Windows 2000-based domain controller, one or more of the groups that are included in the export contain more than 1000 group members. Alternatively, on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based domain controller, one or more of the groups that are included in the export contain more than 1500 group members.
For each group that contains more than 1000 group members in Windows 2000, only the first 1000 group members will appear in the export list. For each group that contains more than 1500 members in Windows Server 2003, only the first 1500 group members will appear in the export list.

Because the membership list is not sorted alphabetically, the missing group members may appear to be arbitrary.

Cause

Windows 2000 exports group members in batches of 1000 entries. Windows Server 2003 exports group members in batches of 1500 entries. The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server queries additional group members by using a ranged attribute specification. The LDAP server will quit a query for additional group members if the server encounters a group that has fewer values than are identified in the attribute specification range.
